There are two distinct types of worm farming:
Vermiculture
This involves the breeding and development of worms to sell, often as bait for fisherman. The important factor with this particular type of commercial worm farm is that it is best conducted indoors. Its important that temperature, humidity and soil conditions are closely controlled. Worms are bred generally in tiered concrete boxes, plastic or wood. The boxes are lines with bedding, and worms are later moved to deeper outdoor pits. Once outside, the worms are fed organic waste and left to mature ready for sale as bait, the whole cycle can take up to around 20weeks.
Vermicomposting
This type of commercial worm farm sees specially selected breeds of composting worm left to decompose waste into organic compost, this compost is then sold to the consumer. This type of commercial worm farm takes place outside, and large quantities of material can be transformed into usable compost. Most commercial worm farms are smale scale operations run by gardeners, although some farmers are launching larger scale operations to expand there farming portfolios.
Its widely thought that commercial worm farms may well be able to play a role in large scale waste management schemes.
