So what is Worm farming?

Well to start us off we are going to focus on vermiculture worm farming, for more information on different types of worm farming see our commercial worm farming section. This type of worm farming is often used by gardeners and those wishing to supply their own organic compost.

So why use a worm farm?

Well worms are an excellent way to turn kitchen scraps into compost, this compost is ideal for fertilising your plants and garden. You can set up your very own worm farm at home, its not difficult to do and is an inexpensive way to create your own organic compost.

Building your own worm farming operation at home:

- Start by choosing a suitable container, plastic bucket, wooden box, or even better a special worm farming bin that you can purchase online or at a local store.

- Ensure you have an outlet at the bottom to drain of liquid.

- Half fill the worm farm with some bedding, again this is best purchased, but you can use compost, newspaper, card or well rotting sawdust.

- Ensure the bedding is kept well watered so it doesnt dry out.

- Now you can add the worm, the best type to use are compost worms, they have a high tolerance for worm farming conditions, and can be purchased from commercial worm farms.

- Allow a few days for the worms to acclimatize and settle in to their new home.

- You can now begin adding food, worms can consume an enormous amount even up to 50% of their body wieght per day.

- Start by adding small amounts of waste food, a little at a time.

- Vegetables, fruit, paper and cardboard are all fine, but avoid fat, meat, onions, citrus and garlic as they tend to not like these.

- Ensure the worm farm stays cool, and moist, remembering to remove the excess liquid to avoid drowning your worms, this liquid can be used on your garden plants!

- You can at intervals remove the worms produce, simply remove the top part of the worm farm where the majority of the worms are, and lay the rest of the material on a plastic sheet, any worms left will soon crawl out, these can be returned to the top section of the worm farm. The material left on the sheet is excellent compost.

Congratulations, you just took your first step into worm farming!
